The Onde Story

The award-winning Onde Trio met at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music Pre-College Program in 2023, and was coached in their first year by pianist Allegra Chapman. Now in their second year and with the mentorship of renowned chamber coach Doris Fukawa at SFCM, the trio is deepening their collaboration. The ensemble chose the name Onde Trio, inspired by the varied relevance of the Italian word for wave, onde, to the group – from the qualities of the sound (waves) they create together to the waves of the San Francisco Bay and lastly, a playful nod to the waves in their hair.

Onde received First Prize in the US International Music Competition's (USIMC) Young Artist Award in Classical Chamber Music (Group B) in August 2024. In 2024, the trio won second place in the MIMA Young Artist Competition for Chamber Music/String Solo and was invited to perform at Colburn; and won second prize in Category A (up to 18 years) in the ENKOR International Music Competition. In addition to their ongoing training at SFCM, the trio participated in a masterclass with Emanuel Ax in October 2024 and a Chamber Music Intensive Workshop with the Alexander String Quartet at The Crowden School in early 2024.

The Onde Trio has performed throughout the Bay Area, most recently to a full house at the SFCM’s Bowes Center in the Barbro Osher Recital Hall with their debut full length concert “An Evening with the Onde Trio” on November 27, 2024.  They were invited to perform at the USIMC Winner's Concert at the First United Methodist Church in Palo Alto; the San Francisco Conservatory of Music's UCello Lounge; The Berkeley Piano Club; and the Crowden School. As a trio of multi-racial musicians committed to fostering the representation of Black and Latinx communities in classical music, they are excited to share their passionate interpretations of classical music with diverse audiences in the Bay Area and beyond.
